چکیده

A numerical investigation has been conducted into the influence of flow compressibility effects around an open-wheeled racing car. A geometry was created to comply with 2012 F1 regulations. Incompressible and compressible CFD simulations were comparedfirstly with models which maintained Reynolds number as Mach number increased, and secondly allowing Mach number and Reynolds number to increase together as they would on track. Results demonstrated significant changes to predicted aerodynamic performance even below Mach 0·15. While the full car coeffi cients differed by a few percent, individual components (particularly the rear wheels and the floor/ diffuser area) showed discrepancies ofover 10% at higher Mach numbers when compressible and incompressible predictions were compared. Components in close ground proximity were most affected due to the ground effect. The additional computational expense required for the more physically-realistic compressible simulations would therefore be an additional consideration when seeking to obtain maximum accuracy even at low freestream Mach numbers.

Modeling of a Racing Car with Modelica’s Multi-Body Library

The modular modeling of the 3-dimensional mechanics of a racing car with Modelica is discussed. For example, one base model class of the wheel suspension is defined and used to model 4 occurences in the front and rear suspension. This model of the car is based on a new Modelica library to model 3-dimensional mechanical systems. This library is explained in some detail.

Experimental Study of Open-Wheel Race-Car Front Wings

An experimental study was performed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Low-Speed Wind Tunnel to quantify the performance and flowfleld effects of two-element open-wheel-race-car front wing configurations. Four distinct configurations were tested inand out-of-ground effect and at various speeds (Reynolds numbers), angles of attack, and flap positions. A splitter plate was installe...

Istory, and Computer Games

The year is 1967. The cars are monstrously powerful, extremely light, and the tires are so hard that a single set will often last three race weekends! Brakes are terrible. Forty gallons of volatile gasoline surround the driver— contained by nothing more than a thin skin of fragile aluminium—and there are no seatbelts. The circuits are breathtakingly beautiful, supremely challenging, and brutall...

Determination of Dynamic Instability Speed of an Unsweep Wing in Subsonic Flow Including Compressibility Effects

In this paper, the equation of motion of an elastic 2 DoF wing model has been derived using Lagranges method. The aerodynamic loads on the wing were calculated via the Strip-Theory and the effect of compressibility was included. Wing deflections due to bending and twist motions were determined using the Assume-Mode method. The aeroelastic equations were solved numerically using the V-g method. ...

Numerical Simulation of Air Flow around the NP Car Using the Realizable k-ε Turbulence Model to Predict Aerodynamic Forces and Moments

In this study, a numerical computational fluid dynamics study is conducted in order to predict the aerodynamic forces on the NP car. The turbulent air flow around the car is modeled using the realizable k-ε model. First, results are validated against those presented for the Ahmed’s body. Next, the fluid flow around the car is simulated for different car speeds ( to mph) and fl...
